Inspirational -- Cook Wheat & Gluten-Free from scratch, 21 Oct 2008
So many other books in this category don't really give you anything new and rely on your ability to purchase the specialist products, which cost more. That's not why you bought the book is it? Lola's book is a breath of fresh air as you can make all your favourite bake goods from scratch. There are Sauce-blocks and Flour Blends to get you started and Batters, Breads, Pasta (home-made), Cakes, Cookies, desserts, waffles, muffins, scones, pancakes, pastries, quiches and even some main-course dishes. Guess what ... Banana Fritters! Yorkshire Pudding! Marshmallow! Apple and Rhubarb Crumble! Christmas Pudding! Dumplings! Crumpets (Yes)! Sausage Rolls! There are a few uncommon flours used -- Maize, Chickpea, Potato, Tapioca but all these are available at a good quality Health Food Shop. All very good alternatives to wheat. Enjoy
Dear Lola
I have recently received a copy of your wonderful "Bread, Buns and Breakfasts" book as a gift. Most of the gluten free books I have are by an American author, Bette Hagman- "The Gluten Free Gourmet."For the last seven years I have been using her recipes and have struggled along, but at least the ones that did turn out were edible.
I am absolutely delighted to have an Australian book with such great variations and your flour blend is a joy to work with. It is nice not to have to use guar and xanthan gum that caused painful flatulance and bloating. Thank you so much for the time and effort that you have given to the coeliac's with this wonderful publication.
Sincerely Sandra
Hi Lola, What a success the bread has been, Elliott is back to having sandwiches at school. Makes for a much easier morning not having to prepare a hot meal in a thermos. We are so grateful for your help. I have referred a few people to your website who hadn't heard of Wheat Free World before while singing your praises of how fantastic you and the service you offer are. Richelle
Lola you are a real doll ; you are a hero in this household. I have cooked your crumpets many times, and am just loving them for breakfast. I hope you realise how much you are appreciated. You really make a difference to my life. Thank you so very much. regards Heather
Hi Lola
Have been trying some of your recipes in your book. My teenage son has recently been diagnosed with coeliacs and really misses bread. All the recipes I've tried using my bread machine were a failure, any done in the oven worked. So when i saw all your recipes were baked traditionally it piqued my interest. You are also using very different ingredients from many other recipes, which i find intriguing. I love cooking and have enjoyed the challenge of gluten free cooking. I guess my son is lucky in that way.
He loves all the loaves I’ve cooked so far from your book which is great and I would like to try them all
Thank you for your wonderful recipes Denice NZ
Dear Lola, Since being diagnosed with Coeliac disease 12 months ago I have purchased both of your books and I find them a wonderful help. I thought I would never be able to eat crumpets again. Thanks for these wonderful publications - my children don't turn their noses up at any of my gluten free recipes now. Keep up the great work, Margaret
Hello Lola,
Thank you so much for excellent fool proof recipes. I have made a number of things now and everything has turned out just fine. I have also tried on a number of occasions to 'kill' the Potato Bread but it just keeps turning out just fine. If making an eat now loaf (as against a freezer loaf) I now just toss the flour, arrowroot and egg into the yeast mixture and give it a vigorous stir with a spoon until well mixed, before letting it rise and into the oven. It comes out lovely every time. My husband reckons my home made bread far outranks anything that we have bought. regards Julie
Hi Lola
Just had to write and say how wonderful it was to find your book. I have always had a problem with eating bread and starting making my own many years ago. However I started feeling distended and uncomfortable after breakfast and my dietitian suggested giving up wheat, my daughter in law also suggested it as she doesn't eat it any more either. I started to try and make bread from organic flours and had very little success, so to find your book has saved me a lot of wasted time and effort not to say saved me money. I am looking forward to making your delicious recipes. I really like the way you have written the book and of course knowing that you have so thoroughly researched your recipes over the years. I will be passing your web site to a few friends who have similar issues.
Many thanks again, Avril
Hi Lola
Thanks so much for your cook book. I bought 2 copies (one for my mum) and am
busily trying the recipes. My 7yo daughter was diagnosed with coeliac
disease this year.
Your pikelets, scones and fairy cakes have definitely got the thumbs-up
(from Stephanie and her non-coeliac brother and sister). regards Helen
Dear Ms Workman
I received "Bread, Buns and Breakfasts" for Christmas, and have been receiving compliments ever since. I have a son-in-law who is, inter alia, a serious foodie, a distributor of arguably Australia's finest range of single-origin coffee beans, and wheat-intolerant. For quite some time, I have been baking wheat-free bread for him, which I exchange for coffee. Before Christmas, the most successful recipe I had found was one from a Breville bread-machine book based on white and brown rice. It was palatable, but a bit on the cakey side.
Since switching to your Hi-top Grain Loaf, I have been almost embarrassed by the praise heaped upon me by said son-in-law. Certainly the crumb and general texture is vastly superior to the Breville recipe, and since I started using your bread improver the actual making process has become embarrassingly simple. So, congratulations on a well-researched and thoroughly practical recipe -- it gives me supreme confidence to move on to some of the others in your book.
Just in passing, may I say how much I appreciate your approach to "Postage & Packaging". Many internet-based suppliers seem to use P&P as a hidden price-booster, so it is refreshing to encounter an honest trader.
May your enterprise prosper! Tony NSW
Dear Lola
Congratulations ! Your new bread book is absolutely beautiful. The work you have put into the book is obvious. It is so detailed and full of information and the pictures look so "yummy" encouraging us to try the recipes immediately. Also I would like to take this opportunity to say "Thankyou", it is always great
to know that I can ring you when I need advice. It has been invaluable to me without a doubt.
Sincerely Maria
Dear Lola
I'm really enjoying reading your books and gearing up to try all the recipes! I have learnt so much from your introductions alone - storage and correct tins etc. I have been a coeliac for nearly four years and have produced so many disappointing things in the kitchen that I had almost resolved to survive on the pre-made or packet varieties as a bitter compromise!
I made the Hot Cross Buns the same evening that I received your books in the mail and they were so good that I rang my mother up at 11pm to come around and taste one! Alison
Dear Lola -. My daughter loves your rusks, and they are so easy to make, please send two more packs of your pre-mix. Janet
Dear Lola
Today made your sandwich loaf. Marilyn from Coeliac in Perth gave me recipe using your bread improver L.S.A & psyilium Husks. After 4years it is the best bread I have ever made or tasted, THANK YOU.! I used Arrowroot as couldn’t get any tapioca starch, I still cannot get over your bread.
When will your Bread Book be available? I want to buy one. Again many thanks ; Julie from WA
Dear Lola,
I have been a coeliac for almost 3 ½ years. It has only been during the last eighteen months that I have been using your cookbook (I have Edition 1 and 2!) and I must say how helpful it has been. Besides your unique recipes, it has also helped me to understand how different ingredients work in a recipe and I have had better success with converting some standard recipes. Thank you for your books. They were recommended to me as the gluten-free cooking bible and I’ve not been disappointed. Marlane
Dear Lola,
Just letting you know that I made the crumpets this morning and they were YUMMY! Thanks for all your help and great ideas. Lainie
Dear Lola,
I received your book last week and have so far tried out four recipes. The Pumpkin Scones, Fluffy Pikelets and Banana Cake were all very Successful. Thanks again Paula SA Dear Lola,
I have just made 2 recipes from your wheat free world book and they both worked and taste great. I will no doubt make more over the next free weeks. This book is exactly what I was looking for, basic and simple to follow. Thanks Toni Hi Lola,
What a wonderful book, I thought your first book was good but this book is outstanding with its great selection of recipes that our whole family can enjoy without the usual xanthan gum / soy flavours that our non-coeliac family members hate. Emily- WA
Dear Lola
I am not only a Coeliac, I have Insulin dependant diabetes and am also lactase intolerant. I find your book a godsend dealing with my complaints, especially your bread recipes, I use them all as they keep fresh, I put half in the freezer and the remainder in the ‘frig’ as I like a sandwich for lunch. Keep up the good work! Linda NSW
Dear Lola,
Thank you for your great book with its incredible selection of gluten free recipes that make life for myself and my Coeliac family of four once again enjoyable. We love the mini pizzas! Jannine
Hullo Lola,
I couldn’t believe that someone could actually produce a recipe for gluten free pasta that worked without the aid of Xanthan gum, a product that gives me severe stomach cramps. I was so excited with my first batch of fettuccini that I had to immediately make some more and have now perfected lasagne sheets, you are a “Wizard” Margaret Tas.
Dear Lola, Many thanks for your wonderful contribution to gluten free cookery, particularly for tentative cooks like myself; unlike other publications every recipe that I’ve tried from your book has worked! I do look forward to your “Tips” column in the Coeliac Magazine; please keep it up. Anna Qld
Dear Lola, How wonderful to find a gluten free cookbook that isn't filled with soups, salads and recipes that just avoid gluten rather than replacing it in our diet. Our whole family, those without intolerance as well as the two coeliac people are really enjoying your wonderful recipes especially the pastries, great to be able to make an apple pie again without crumbly pastry, my favourite is the pastry from the Date Slice. Joan- Albany WA
Hi Lola
We have made, crumpets and focaccia with great success and words of appreciation from the family We are very impressed with your book and will be trying a lot more recipes soon. John ACT
